MacBeth Book Cover

This project was an attempt to create 3 unique book covers for the classic tragedy Macbeth. One is a mix-media, the other uses only typography and the third is a combination of the two.

I wanted to use black a white to create a dark mood. This is a sampling of some of the books I was inspired by. I love the use of negative space and the creative typography.
This is my typography cover. One of the strongest symbols in Macbeth is Lady Macbeth's hands. Her "Out damned spot" monologue is one of the strongest quotes and I wanted to carry that into the cover. I also loved the idea of using the thumb to highlight the "something wicked this way come" quote. It is subtle but clever. I played around with different colours and placements of the hand, but I felt the white was the most impactful. This cover was created in AI, but super imposed on the book in PS.
This cover uses mixed media. I wanted to create a blood-stained background. I created this with paint on canvas. I imported the image and removed the background in photoshop, leaving the canvas texture where the "blood" stains are. I wanted to around with negative space. I was able to create something a little different by using white on the B and M. I flesh breaking the word into two was effective given how known the play is. This was entirely created in Photo Shop.
This book cover was inspired by blackout art and poetry. I wanted to highlight some of the most famous quotes in Macbeth. In particular, I boxed the "something wicked this way comes" quote, because it gives the perfect amount of foreshadowing to the rest of the play. I loved the blood splatter too. It was the last addition the cover and creates a tragic eery mode.
