BOOK MAKING
Concertina Photobook:
What is a concertina?
A concertina booklet is an origami-looking pop-up book. It is called a concertina booklet because the folded structure resembles a concertina, which is an instrument similar to an accordion. Images are shown in a continuous style, portraying a closer collection of images in comparison to a photo book. I am excited to experiment with a different format of photo books and image organisation
Experimenting with making a book:
When creating the template for my concertina, I chose to format my images in squares, creating a polaroid feel to my concertina.
Using the photoshop template, I cropped and formatted my images along the boundary lines, eventually printing them out and using a craft knife to both score to create the folds and cutting to create an accordion shape to the book.
After creating a concertina, I think I might experiment more with this type of photobook as it is low cost- something applicable to the audience I want to appeal to in my work.
Stab binding:
Stab binding Template
Process of Stab Binding:  Using an awl or a similar sharp pointed object, the binder stabs holes along the left edge of a book in a straight line or more complex pattern and then sews thread through the holes to both bind and decorate the book. The Japanese Stab Binding produces a book with a spine that does not allow the book to be laid flat. The book cover is made using a decorative piece of coloured paper.
Photoshop Process:
Using a pre-made template, I used the select tool to position my images into the frame, cropping the remaining sections of the image with the marquee tool. After printing, I use a craft knife to cut the pages into equal rectangles, layering them in the desired order one on top of the other, and poking 5 holes an equal distance apart near on edge.
Process:
After poking holes, I used a needle and thread to sew the pages and cover together, typing the string in the middle of the pages and weaving back and forth through the holes. I really liked my outcome, achieving the easily- viewed, low cost aim I wanted so I would like to experiment further with sewn binding books.
