My friend Peter texted me a few weeks ago to make a design for his new surfboard. He shaped this surfboard by himself and put a pink color on the top (great choice) and asked me to draw his favorite mammals on it — Sperm whales. He loves their ability to sleep vertically.
I did some quick research about these special creatures.
Fact No. 1: Sperm whales are really giant.
Fact No. 2: Sperm whales are actually standing in the ocean while sleeping. They nap in vertical positions for 10 to 15 minutes during their day (smart animals, I should start practicing this habit on the surface).
Beside the fact that I started to admire this creatures, I realized that these sleeping positions are perfect for the design of Peter's surfboard. I was thinking about the technique I would use and I made a few concepts on my computer. I had a vision so it was quite a short process. Moreover, I got the idea to make a short story (I call it a joke but I'm the only one laughing).
The drawing process took around 20 hours. After that Peter glassed the top layer and the surfboard was ready to surf!
