Every time I visit my hometown and family, my nieces usually blurt out something like, “HiImissedyousooooooo much did you bring your tablet?” We’ve spent hours on interactive stories, games, puzzles and Netflix. It’s the best babysitter’s helper since my dog (they’re obsessed with him too). Sometimes, they help me with games and I’m amazed at what their little minds comprehend. They all have one thing in common: they love to laugh.

Silly things have always commanded attention of children. I remember opening up Cut the Rope, and my three year old niece participated. If the candy missed (which happened more than often), the little OmNomNom creature makes a sad face before the game automatically restarts. Every single time that sad face appeared, it got peals of laughter from the kids.

I’ve thought a lot about if I could make an app like this, what would kids want out of it? What sort of sillyness can I imagine for a whole digital playground? I picture kids with their self-made creative monsters, running rampantly through the pixel park /burping and /scaring, /sneaking and /roaring! If they take care of the monster, it’ll help them through games or show them secret areas. I’ll build them a safe world where they can get creative, explore, learn and adventure with their new eenie meanie monster.

Task analysis: Study the "how-to's" and why people complete tasks a certain way. From there, focus on children; what they excel at (swiping, tapping) and what they're clumsy with (infinite scroll).
Notebooks, grid paper, and ideas flowing for the new app.
