The first of many illustrations for The Lengend of Son Tinh, Thuy Tinh

"... one day, there were two strangers came to see the King. They both proposed to marry the princess. The King asked them for their names. One bowed his head and introduce himself and said that he was Son Tinh - the God of the mountain - he reigned on the height of Tan Vien mountain and govern all creatures above. The other one said in a haughty voice that he was Thuy Tinh -

God of the sea - and he governed all living creatures below sea level."

"100 pots of glutinous rice, 100 chung cakes, a nine tusk elephant, a nine spur rooster,

a nine color hair horse."

"Trăm ván cơm nếp, trăm nẹp bánh chưng, voi chín ngà, gà chín cựa,

ngựa chín hồng mao."

and that's how the epic battle begin.

"... Thuy Tinh came later, could not get married, got angry, brought giant waves and troops to get

My Nuong back. Son Tinh did not flinch. He used power to pick up hills, moved mountains, build land to prevent floods. The two sides fought for several months, in the end, Son Tinh was still steady and Thuy Tinh was exhausted. He had to withdraw his troops."

However, Thuy Tinh still never forgets the past. Every year around July and August,

Thuy Tinh raises his stroops and waves to fight Son Tinh.
