Universe: Textile Sculture Project 2022

The iconography, begun by witnessing a cat mistake bristle grass for a mouse and play with it, represents the possibility of plant fur against animal or synthetic fur.
The collection of iconographies, ‘Universe’ was created inspired by Yin Yang and Eastern Asia’s philosophy towards the universe and its interconnected relationships.
The collection ponders upon the relationship between nature and its habitants from its birth to death through micro and macro lenses.
This particular iconography was created with naturally dyed foxtail, a cluster of grass, to explore my concerns and address issues on the ubiquitous amount of environmental damage– from animal slaughter, and chemical waste, to labor abuse that occurs with synthetic dyes.
The iconographies are created with alive colors since natural dying is made up of multiple molecules which enable them to create a wide range of hues naturally.
The color palettes with multiple molecules are complex, layered and transformed over time or in different lights as opposed to synthetic color that contains one hue, molecule and spectrum.
The foxtail was naturally mordanted with aloe vera and then dyed with medicinal plants such as cempasuchil, comfrey root, hibiscus, red cabbage, rosemary, turmeric and so on to create a rainbow palette.
From material to process and attitude, every process is sustainable, animal and chemical-free to support the theme of smart art, which as a practical textile, can alter people’s lifestyles, inspiring them to discover the beauty of nature and sustainability.
The collection suggests not only the possibilities of sustainable fur in future against animal or synthetic fur, but also various organic and healthy colors with medicinal properties from dyeing plants.
