What Remains: The Life and Work of Sally Mann Response

While watching the documentary “What Remains: The Life and Work of Sally Mann” I had a lot of mixed emotions. There were a lot of times while watching the movie where I thought that we don’t need to see this part of her life. Like with her series of her taking pictures of her husband she shows too much of her life with the viewer. I felt like a person was sharing too much about themselves so much that they should go tell a therapist instead of a random stranger. I thought the photos of her children were mostly artistic with some of the pictures of them when they were older and they were still naked to be kind of gross. And when we moved on to her work about the dead bodies I found the idea behind it to be very interesting. I did not like seeing the fresh body with all the maggots as it made me feel really nauseous. Some takeaways that I had after it had finished is that I was really inspired to go farther with my own art. I could feel the hurt that Sally Mann felt when she had worked really hard on her new collection only for it to fall through but at the same time it gave me hope that even if there are disappointments evolving your art there might be something even greater just around the corner.
