Marriages that survive infidelity are rare, and a couple willing to discuss the details of such an event on camera are very rare. This couple was a wonderful exception. I shot their interview over about 3 hours one afternoon with a cameraman. They were in the room with one another the entire time.

These are some of the interview questions I asked Fred. While it's not my practice to give subjects their questions ahead of time, I will always oblige if they ask. When I arrived for the interview, Fred mentioned that he was concerned about the questions seeming like he was being accused or condemned. We discussed how the audience is thinking about these questions already, and asking him on camera will give him a chance to clarify and bring his perspective to light.

A segment of the quick story outline drawn up after transcribing the full interview. Even pieces of this outline got cut eventually, but the bones are here.

With two separate interviews to merge together into one story, it helped to physically cut the soundbites into segments and assemble them like a puzzle to construct the narrative. This can also be helpful when someone tells their story out of sequence or cyclically.
