Consumer Reports: Revamped

For Editorial Design, our assignment was to take a contemporary magazine, study it, and re-create it on our own style. I chose to do consumer reports because it is sad seeing an informative and interesting magazine weighed down by such thoughtless graphic design. Wordy and crowded layouts, awful typography, and generic images are what stand out, hence making it my mission to clean it up. Airy columns, infographics to cut down the amount fo information the magazine tries to convey to readers, images pertaining to the articles, and clean, sophisticated typography.
Three different magazine covers that cover different months (the magazine is a monthly subscription) of how the magazine would carry out its new brand.
Table of Contents: Using hierarchy & slab-serif font to draw the eyes to the important features, reviews, stories, etc.
Briefs Section: this sections is about different stories and reviews of Electronics and gadgets. I kept the pages clean with pops of colors and electronic illustrations for organization, as well as use of line to draw the eye through the whole briefs section.
Image-Driven Feature: Because of the magazines infomrative aspect, i decided to take a feature they had about vacuums and revamp it completely.
I used this elaborate font with this section because this review is more likely geared towards a more maternal and domesticated audience; the same thought process was layed out for the color choices.
This section displays different glitches that brand names might mistake in product packaging, advertising, etc. The use of the red is to give it both a pop and emphasize the cons of glitches found on products.
Feature story: Healthcare reform and insurance payment. The use of the black and white with accents of purple is a way of making the feature clean and dramatic at the same time, as there are no images in this feature.
