Sustainable Product Design: Kitchen Chair

Designing A Sustainable Artefact: A Movable Chair in Kitchens

For this project, I decided to work on a chair for use in the non-commercial kitchens. The aim was to have the final product be sustainable, compact and inexpensive.

Target audience: Women working in the kitchens in their homes

Before starting the work on the actual product design, I carried out a small UX research with the target audience and queried about their stance on kitchen chairs from different angles. Primarily, qualitative interviews were conducted from women in different age groups, geographical setting and lifestyles. While there was variance in participant group, the set of questions remained the same, giving room for the interviewee to go into details wherever they prefer.

Interview questions:
1) Approximately, how much of your time per day is spent in kitchen? Is your kitchen small or big, in terms of space? Do you have a sitting space to sit down and work?
2) Do you feel any physical pain after working in the kitchen? If yes, which body parts (back, shoulders, legs). Have you done anything about it?
3) Would you like to have a sitting space within your kitchen? Do you think it’ll help? Have you kept a chair or something similar in your kitchen before? Why or why not?
4) What are some of the other problems you face while working in kitchen?
