Toile de Jouy is an antique fabric made of cotton, with repeated patterns of hunting scenes, rural landscapes, mythological characters, fauna and flora. It’s printed in a single color – usually blue, green, purple, gray or red. Toile de Jouy fabric was originally produced in Ireland in the eighteenth century also became popular in India. The French word toile  means linen cloth. Jouy comes from Jouy-en-Josas, the name of the French town where this fabric was made.
Toile prints can also include florals, geometrics, botanicals, mythological subjects, popular culture, current events, faraway places—whatever floats the textile maker’s fancy.

Today, Schumacher produces dozens of printed toile fabrics, embroideries and wallcoverings, ranging from historic to mystical.
Fashion brands like Libertine and Victor Glemaud are no stranger to toile, and Christian Dior and Alexander McQueen also incorporated toile into their collections.
It was really famous in antique French interiors. It’s also been having a moment in fashion this year, as seen in Dior's Spring 2021 collection of candles, dishes, totes, and apparel in the classic print.
