The theme of this editorial project is “zeitgeist”, or sign of the times. I researched several topics that I feel have the most significant influence on society today. The topics that had the strongest influence on my final collection are war, religion, technology, and the media. I titled my collection “repetitive forces” because this was a recurring theme I drew from my research that tied all the topics I focused on together. They each rely on the concept of repeating an idea until people believe it to be true.
The garment from my collection that I produced is my interpretation of influence by the media. I entered this design in the “Night of Spectacles” fashion design competition, a charity fashion show that raises money for the Lighthouse Foundation for vision and hearing. For the competition, I was required to incorporate recycled eyeglasses in at least 40 percent of the design. I used the lenses to depict the media as a repetitive force. The construction for this part of the design consisted of gluing newspaper to the back of each lens, drilling holes in both sides of each lens, and hand sewing each lens to the dress.
My design has been selected for the Night of Spectacles competition and will show in Atlanta on May 10, 2014.
