Hilma af Klint: At the Cutting Edge

Background
Hilma af Klint was a cutting edge artist. Unrecognized during her time, she pioneered abstract paintings years before the likes of Wassily Kandinsky and Paul Klee. Her radical style paralleled the equally groundbreaking scientific breakthroughs of the early 20th century. Hilma channeled the wonder of this burgeoning scientific age in her work by way of scale and abstraction. As an admirer of her work, I wanted to celebrate her radical spirit by highlighting this relation between her work and the sciences.

Visual Concept
For this poster, I drew from the aesthetics of the Bauhaus, a style that Hilma presaged. Circles, prominent visual motifs in Hilma's paintings and in contemporary discoveries concerning subatomic particles and physics, are the focal point of this poster.
