Humble Melon | 謙卑的瓜(2019)

Title      Humble Melon(2019)
Bronze, Chayote
Size: 28 X 18 x 8 cm

Artist Statement
Sitting in the melon with palms together, absorbing and growing a grateful heart. In memory of my grandfather and grandmother who built us the Chayote shelter.

The piece is a tribute to my grandparents who loved and supported the family and built a beautiful garden in a subvert area in Hong Kong — where most people stay in an urban area. I grew up in a village with fields, valleys and streams. 'The Humble Melon' expresses gratitude to family and its enormous nature. The Chayote leaf represents hearts and love, and the fruit is also named "Palm together melon," meaning humility and gratitude.

The artist experimented with the showcase of a living Chayote, and unfortunately, the plant's death happened during the COVID-19 outbreaks in Hong Kong. The exhibition hall was closed for 3 months, and the Chayote showcased the life cycle. The unexpected in life and nature were captured within the exhibition.

Tasks: Metal casting, growing Chayote(plant)
Behind the scene

Create models for casting with sandstone, originally the idea was creating 1 set of 2 melons. Later on changed to having a living Chayote next to the casted bronze piece.
Casting the model, and trying out effects, growing the Chayote
Exhibition: The piece was exhibited in the Hong Kong Visual Arts Centre in Mar 2020.
The plants started well in the Exhibition hall, it climbed onto the wall.
After 4 days of the exhibition opening, the outbreak of COVID-19 caused the closure of the show for 3 months. The plant died. The artist attached the plant on the wall. Showcased the natural life cycle of the plant.
