Black Wood Ear | 黑木耳 (2021)

Title: Black Wood Ear (2021)
Bronze/ wood
45 X 28 X 35 cm

Artist Statement
Breaking down organic matters, fungi are essential for the physical cycle in nature. It makes black wood ear grows on the fallen branches. Although there is no root, it is listening to those unseen voices. It is micro and not seeable, but it is everywhere.

This piece is a double metaphor for the black wood ear — ear-like fungi that are supposed to be a superfood that cleans up bad things from our blood. Starting from a fungus growing on decayed wood, it becomes a good food, and then it gradually looks like an ear to hear invisible voices. Even though our voices would not be heard in such a decayed system, we still find a bronze ear growing from uncountable fungi somewhere that could not be disappeared.
Behind the Scene
The bronze black wood ear was cashed from a model after 3D scanned and printed for resizing. Originally, it was on a marble, but while the idea developed more about the decaying wood then it changed.

The wood work began and finding a suitable shape and direction. The wood was placed completely upside down at the final stage.
Exhibition
The piece was exhibited in the Hong Kong Visual Arts Centre in Mar 2022.
