Project Brief – Leftover space (Inhabit)
Site Location
Nottingham City centre, between the new tram bridge and the rear exit of the Broadmarsh centre. The site stretches from the top of the hill where the new contemporary arts centre is situated, down the hill towards the tram station.
Brief
The project aims to look at the thoroughfare and route through the rear exit to the broadmarsh centre looking at architectural solutions for the regeneration of a leftover space within the site. The major focus of the design analyses the motion of the user from one part of the site and their journey to the other parts of the site utilising a series of interventions along the way. The brief is to also integrate a multiple occupancy unit within the scheme with the focus of this aspect of the design on a live / work / creative design space integrating shop windows and small retail units. A place for creative’s to live, design and exhibit in the whole. The design will be isuperimposed onto the design framework for Nottingham and will play a part in linking the city centre with the east side regeneration of the city (The project also links my second year CDP which is cinema sitting on a site further down the route into the east side).
User requirements
The routes through the site will hope to improve the quality of the area for the Nottingham public and transient population. The multiple occupancy live work space above are aimed at designers / creative’s of all back ground and I want to offer a solution that appeals to a wide range of design led professionals . The landscape below is a space aimed a bringing together a wide range of people from the city offering break out space / retail / performance / exhibition interaction creating a vibrant urban zone.

My site spans across quite a large area. I will look at the overall masterplan and design of the public spaces, however the focus of the detail design will concentrate on the multiple occupancy units and the landscaped routes to the area below these units to the west of the tram line.
Motivation –
My motivation and drivers are all about the challenges of taking a desperate leftover space and revitalising this into a vibrant exiting area which will give life to other areas of the city through linking routes. I want to improve the overall quality of Nottingham by regenerating this area. Nottingham has a development plan for the eastside and my site provides the perfect opportunity to link this further to the city centre.
