In the painting I have tried to capture the sense of decay and waning spirit of the once mighty roman capitol. During this late medieval period, the great city of Constantinople had been reduced to clusters of misty villages and ruins surrounded by the seemingly impenetrable theodosian walls. The city had suffered through isolation and poverty, resulting in increasing depopulation. Many years of conflict had robbed the city of it's riches and art, even the imperial court had little left in their treasury. Only the church of holy wisdom is seen standing firmly as a monument to the city's past glory.
