Women in music zine

As part of my college work in 2017, my final project was to create a zine.

I had originally thought about creating an album cover packaging, but I knew it wouldn't push me creatively as much as I'd have wanted to. I then thought about creating some lyric posters, but then from that idea came the idea to create a zine all about music - specifically lyrics that empower people. I then put my iTunes on shuffle and made a list of songs that had empowering lyrics. Most of the songs I had noted down were by women or aimed towards women. This really helped me decide what I wanted to do – a zine about women in music. This was either going to be a zine about female artists and how they are represented in the media, or something to do with the music itself by female artists. I decided on the latter.

I whittled down my favourite song lyrics and quotes and started creating the artwork. These included Little Mix's Salute, Jessie J's Who You Are, Stormzy's verse in Little Mix's Power, Demi Lovato's Confident and Adele's quote 'We are a gender, not a genre'.

I really enjoyed this project, especially as it was a far cry from what I had planned to do, but it worked out really well in the end and it was a perfect end to the two years at college (helping me achieve a final grade of D*D*D*), and hopefully shows the improvement that college has helped me achieve.
