Kundu Design Precinct
2020
The project brief was to create a new design precinct for the QUT Kelvin Grove Campus. The proposed site had pre-existing buildings comprised of the Old Student Residences. The designer was to re-purpose and keep some of the buildings, along with designing a new building or buildings to facilitate part of the Design School on the Kelvin Grove campus. The client considered it important to keep some of the Old Student Residences as they were the first of their kind to truly emphasise the spirit of study and exploration. The freedom of exploration, sense of community and village feel created by the Old Student Residences inspired the new design. Incorporating elements of the pre-existing buildings and site in terms of angles and shapes where applied to the form. Similar to natural stacked formation of rocks the new design integrates with the original site and the remaining residences. Curves were added to make a welcoming space for students, as well as working with the natural shape of the body and making manoeuvring within spaces more natural.
