This is a personal illustration inspired by the blood pheasant, a bird native to India, Nepal, Bhutan, China, and Myanmar.
Here's a photo of the real bird. In addition, the flowers used are the noble dendobrium, the state flower of Sikkim in Northern India. I chose this flower because the blood pheasant is the state bird of Sikkim, so I figured the two could potentially go together.
And here's the initial sketch plus color tests. At first I imagined the eye to be closed, but when I played around with an open eye I ended up liking it better.
