Ambient and Organic Data Visualization

In times of fake news, the aim was to stimulate a discourse that shows how climate change is denied in social media. Furthermore, an attempt was made to expand the boundaries of classical data visualization, presenting information through floral characteristics and interactions.

The plant Mimosa Pudica was used as an output. Mimosa are mainly known for a direct reaction to external stimuli. They fold their leaves and contracts when touched or otherwise moved. This reaction was used as a means of visualization to show the frequency of tweets denying climate change such as #ClimateHoax or #GreenScam.
Installation and Construction

Servo motors are connected to different branches of the mimosa. Now, when a hashtag is captured by the Twitter API, one of the servo motors rotates. The rotation causes the attached threads to tighten, pulling down a branch. This provides the impulse that stimulates the mimosa to fold its leaves.
