The Awkward Family
A storybook for Filipino-Chinese children and parents aimed to raise awareness about the importance of children’s emotion education and encourage the building of healthy emotional relationships between children and parents

Talking about emotions isn't really something common in Filipino-Chinese families. For many Filipino-Chinese, they are often taught from a young age to suppress their feelings or put them aside, so many of them grow up feeling too “awkward” to talk about it with their family members. However, research has shown that by teaching children about emotion, they become more competent in regulating and expressing emotions. Therefore, it is important that we raise the awareness regarding the importance of emotion education for children, especially within Filipino-Chinese families.

The Awkward Family is an 8 in. x 8 in. storybook that conveys the message about the importance of communication between parents and children. It tells the tale of twelve unique animals who are part of one family. None of them are related by blood, but they love each other as if they were. Still, there are times when they don't see eye to eye because of misunderstandings, and these inevitably turn into arguments. But with the unexpected help of a lone traveler, the family learns to listen and communicate their feelings with each other.
