This series of codices is an anthology of Gertrude Stein’s poetry from Tender Buttons. It has been designed to visually portray how Stein experimented with the linear form of language.

 

The main concept behind the design is about fragmentation, so this anthology has been fragmented into four codices that progress in visual complexity. The portfolio cover that holds the codices together has been designed to represent “the whole.” This is represented by the circle, square, and triangle shapes because of their inherent simplicity.

 

Also in the spirit of Gertrude Stein’s involvement with artists this cover was designed in collaboration with Illustrator Jake Joslyn.
