Record player animations
Draw hypnotic animated patterns using record players, mobile phones, bike cogs and felt tip pens.

This fun workshop is a modern take on classic zoetrope or ‘phenakistoscope’ paper animations. These are circular animation sequences that are brought alive when spun on a turntable and filmed on digital video. The combination of pattern frequency, video frame rate and record speed create the illusion of circles spinning faster or slower than the turntable.

The workshop was commissioned by Imperial College London for Great Exhibition Road Festival, in partnership with neuroscientists Anirudh Kulkarni and Mathilde De Kerangal. I got a chance to test it first at National Festival of Making 2022.
