tackling loneliness in urban areas
Pals is a service project concept I created during lockdown to help bring people in urban communities more connection through the use of letters without the need for all participants to have technology. Loneliness in cities is a big problem as the more people gathered in one space mean the systems become less humane and empathetic. Almost 50% of adults in the UK say that they are lonely, and loneliness is often stigmatised meaning most people are too embarrassed to admit it, creating a continuous cycle. I used Garnethill community as an example but the service can be requested for any urban community by a resident. Once the pals box is full members of the community get a chance to connect in real life on a specific date in a local park, this gives them an opportunity to discuss the letters and network, sparking bonds which could lead to more social relationships and connection.
