ZINE DESIGN

OVERVIEW

Zines have a deep culture and are known for their DIY nature and their effectiveness of passing along the information to their viewers. When asked, "What is a topic you can go on for hours about?", easy. Vida en la Frontera. Life on the border. This project centers around the city of Laredo, TX, known for its spot on the border of Mexico and the U.S, its diverse culture, and of course tacos.

GOALS

The goal of this project is to successfully represent the city of Laredo, Texas, and its culture using Zine making techniques and Risograph printing. The zine must also incorporate physical materials to create images and text throughout the zine that support the message.

SOLUTIONN

In this project, I utilized everyday objects that can be found in any South Texas home to help create my images. Using elements that the audience can relate to will help connect the reader to the Zine. Using these out-of-the-box techniques also helps in holding the viewer's attention and adding personality.

BRAINSTORMING AND PREPPING FOR RISO

When brainstorming for a topic for the zine it was easy, planning out the information and thinking of how to incorporate physical materials into my zine was the challenge. When brainstorming and word-listing, I was thinking of objects that represent the city and how they connect to the culture. The next challenge was preparing for printing with the Risograph. Each layer must be separated by color and then converted into black and white files. Prepping for printing took most of the project time and planning, but was well worth it in the end.
