Giant Foods: Data Visualization & Presentation

Data Visualization & Presentation
The following is a case study of a hypothetical scenario
Client: Giant

Project: Data Visualization & Presentation

Synopsis: Giant, a subsidiary of Ahold Delhaize, is considering building strategy and tactical plans for building new stores throughout new locations. Using staffing data from The Creative Group in 2018, stakeholders and the team developing the plans will get a visual presentation on recommended positions to consider hiring people in the plan.

Problem: The client wants to know what are the highest paying positions and any clue as to why, as they want to start justifying the budgets and payroll of starting staff at each new location.
PROCESS STEP 1: SET UP THE DATA

Depicted above are the graphs generated from data in Power BI. In this project, I took the data from the PDFs the Creative Group made for each major industry and put it into one master Excel sheet as a dataset. Then I imported the data to a database I made in Power BI to start looking at trends. Above are graphs of the highest paid areas of different industries, labeled as categories. Each of the four graphs are organized by experience (25th being someone with 0 to 2 years of experience, and 50th is 3 to 5 years and etc.) and the graph on the far right has them compiled. This gives an insight to what areas of a business are considered as most valuable monetarily and may post the question "Why are they most valuable now?"
PROCESS STEP 2: Understanding the Styleguide

Next, I took a quick look at Giant's identity system. I did not see a styleguide available for public use so I created a style sheet based off the elements I found off their website. I had planned to apply these elements to the data to make it relatable for shareholders. This was also used to inform the creative decisions for the presentation. Based on the space each color took up on the logo, I associated the colors to the different pay levels with the most experienced and highest paying job titles with the color that took up the least amount of space.

95th Level - Green  75th Level - Purple  50th Level - Red  25th Level - Gold

The colors are also associated with value, as the highest vale is colored green, then the second highest value with purple, next red and least gold.
PROCESS STEP 3: Understanding the Data

Ideally, there would be a team to help translate what the data is suggesting but in this project, I looked at the trends that were coming up on Power BI and drew my own conclusions. I noticed when considering the highest paid positions on average at each experience level, the common positions that came up were either Chief Financial Officer, and Chief Compliance Officer or a position relevant to financials and compliance.

Therefore, I made the presentation about the two positions as the two recommended positions to include in the plans of expanding store locations and businesses. After reading about the two positions, I then made the argument that these two are most valuable because they address the highest impacting risks of the business:

A - Making sure the money is being accounted properly.
B - Making sure the business is operating within the legal regulations respective to the store's location.
Above are more info graphs from the Power BI that reinforce the idea of looking into administrative professionals with a focus in legal and financial expertise. Looking at each info graph, the top 4 positions mostly has something to do with compliance or financial activities.
PROCESS STEP 4: Presentation & Wrap-Up

After getting the slides ready, reviewing the data, and making sure the problem is understood while the solution is addressing the problem, we made our slide. A constraint was mentioned to keep the presentation down to two slides as that is what the client requested.
Personal Notes/Things learned

- The dataset could be further organized. The category section are not organized by main industries (Legal, Creative, Financial, etc.) but came from PDFs of the main industries. At some point that needs to be addressed so analysts and determine which main industry is paid the most.

- If for whatever reason the designer does not have access to the styleguide, they can inspect the code on the brand's website to help deduce the elements that are used in their identity system. (i.e. Images, hex codes to brand colors, css codes to the fonts, etc.)

- Get in the habit of organizing files as you are working on the solution. Although this was a solo project, others may get involved in the future and you must be empathetic to them. When working on a team, there may be a certain way the team needs things organized so they can find their essential materials.

- All source materials are located in a shared folder on my personal cloud (M365)
