Visual Transformation

This is a visual design assignment based on visual transformation of objects. The topic I chose was "A set of geometry box instruments with characteristics of seashells".

As per the requirements, I had to carefully observe seashells and record their characteristics. This meant not only observing their common exterior that's visible at first sight, but also details like their texture, their appearance as they age, their texture and physical composition, how they look when they break, different angles of viewing, etc. This stage was the most interesting part of the assignment for me as I could also use my hand drawing skills for the rough sketches and ideation, and my observation and creative thinking skills were also put to test.

These observed details then had to be incorporated into nine geometry box instruments. I chose compass, divider, ruler, eraser, pencil, sharpener, protractor, and two different types of set squares. The goal was to visually transform seashells into these instruments. The hardship I faced was designing an eraser that resembles a shell, as normally erasers have a plain cuboid structure. I overcame this challenge by changing the top of the eraser into the shape of a spiral snail shell and making the body of the shell look like sand on the seashore when the sea water wets it and retreats back. I faced a similar problem while ideating the pencil. I didn't know at first how to make a pencil look like a shell without losing its usability. Thanks to the observation stage, I realised that shells have a grainy texture and many parallel lines that run across the surface. I used this as the inspiration for the design on the pencil surface.
