THE BRIEF
Worship Central's 2020 conference embraced a theme of vulnerability, connection, and community with the theme "Sons & Daughters." The conference branding featured detail images of diverse people with dappled light falling on their facial features, suggesting being known by God in an intimate and personal way. I was invited to design a stage that expressed these themes and support the conference experience.
DEVELOPMENT
The central metaphor that we embraced for this project was a secret place in the forest, a place of wonder, safety, healing, and beauty. The idea of dappled light lead to the idea of a constellation of beautiful lights in this secret garden space.
After exploring a range ways that we could incorporate both foliage and light, I developed a stage concept that featured cascading layers of light, backed by a projection screen that created the faint illusion of a distant forest landscape.
To execute the constellation of lights on our stage, I designed a the large light fixtures, dubbed HALO Lights. These three large lights created a warm halo of light to back speakers and performers, mimicking the natural glow and lens artifacts that occur when a light flares in the lens of a camera or even the human eye. Additionally, these large lights anchored our "constellation" of lights and established a pleasing visual hierarchy across the stage.
