Editorial Design: The Crow's Nest - 17th Century Notes and Knots
The objective of this project was to view and implement editorial design as a complete system. We were challenged to accommodate varying and unexpected content together into a cohesive set of spreads that ultimately fulfilled our intent. We were asked to select and implement 5 articles, 3 of which were 'featured', with 1 Q&A and a table of contents. We each designed a masthead and cover, as well as a relevant advertisement for the back cover.
We began by selecting and ideating the theme of our magazines, along with identifying a title, target audience, tagline, and intended emotional evocation. We sketched different masthead designs, and implemented digital versions along with cover design options. We settled on a single combination, and continued to refine it throughout the length of the assignment.
Once we had established a working masthead/cover combo, we began working on our type systems within the magazine, establishing consistent hierarchy and grid. We selected fonts and laid out our articles with an appropriate combination of text and imagery.
Ultimately, the goal was to create a cohesive system that allowed room for variation to capture the personality of each article while maintaining a consistent feel throughout the magazine.
Enjoy!
