The course Sustainable Living Laboratories by Professor Scott Boylston at SCAD focused on design's influence on people's daily life where its goal was to identify precise interventions that direct human habits toward more sustainable behavior.
Through this project, we applied research in behavioral economics and cognitive psychology to help individuals alter long-term habits to enhance their positive impacts on the environment and society. As a team, we developed design solutions that create viable sustainable behaviors and life practices.
The Problem -
Food waste in US households
Many human behaviors have a direct and/or indirect impact on climate change. Most of us don't realize or understand the impacts of our
daily actions. One of the most mundane activities that have the strongest impact on climate change is food waste.
Wasted food isn't just a social or humanitarian concern—it's an environmental one.
Food takes up more space in US landfills than
anything else. Almost 570 million tons of loss and waste is produced
in homes every year.

Freshkey helps prevent food spoilage in the fridge. It is a service that keeps track of the food people have and reminds them to use groceries and eat food if it has been in the fridge for a long period of time.
