Covers for seven books about pregnancy and parenting
Book covers for Smaki, a young publishing house based in Dnipro, Ukraine that focuses mainly on books about pregnancy and parenting. So far, I have created eight book covers within this cooperation. All covers feature similar lettering and color palettes.
The first book I worked on was Hold on to Your Kids: Why Parents Need to Matter More Than Peers by Gabor Maté and Gordon Neufeld. It set the style for all the following books.
The second one was Rest, Play, Grow: Making Sense of Preschoolers (Or Anyone Who Acts Like One) by Deborah MacNamara.
Next came Kiss Me: How to Raise Your Children with Love by Carlos González and Birth Reborn: What Childbirth Should Be by Michel Odent.
Two more books I've worked with for Smaki include Baby-Led Weaning: The Essential Guide to Introducing Solid Foods―and Helping Your Baby to Grow Up a Happy and Confident Eater by Gill Rapley and Tracey Murkett and Breastfeeding Made Easy: A Gift for Life for You and Your Baby by Carlos González.
Perhaps the most challenging book — and the only one that's slightly different in lettering and colors — has been Empty Arms: Coping With Miscarriage, Stillbirth and Infant Death by Sherokee Ilse. The book tackles a complex subject that called for a cover that would feel hopeful without being overly cheerful.
The last book cover created for Smaki so far is one for My Child Won't Eat: How to Enjoy Mealtimes without Worry by Carlos González.
Finding new visual solutions within the same style and color palette for each new book has been the most exciting part of my work for Smaki — I don't normally have these limitations in other projects.
This has been a wonderful cooperation, and I'm looking forward to creating more book covers within this series.
