About
This piece explores the human experience by focusing on life’s journey from development to departure. Throughout our life, our appearance and situation slowly and inevitably changes. Growth is depicted using threads of different hues and weights to create various textures and shapes. The piece starts off simple and becomes more elaborate. Some parts are left open to show emptiness and vulnerability.
I selected a palette that uses natural, earthy colors. The beginning starts off white and bare and progresses into something more colorful, abstract, and complex. As the piece develops, the threads start to gather and diverge, creating movement. Strands are woven in different patterns to create patches of intricacy, uniformity, and tension. The colors transition into earthier tones with the piece fading back to white, ending the way it began.
Process
Everything was done by hand using a handmade loom. Every single piece of thread was carefully woven and wrapped using a long metal needle.
