1. Tears'
V's poem ‘Tears’ is viewable here: https://thesassylibraryfox.wordpress.com/2018/10/01/tears/.

As an avid reader, I want to convey the emotions and imagery evoked by words. I was inspired by the poem's final line “to heaven or hell” and the imagery associated with both (e.g. sunlight, lava), the water cycle and V's photograph of a waterfall. I love storytelling, so I personified the poem with a waterfall ‘face', which recalls fantasy novels V and I enjoy.

I used lineart lightly, to create a storybook-esque illustration while preserving the airiness, and I chose watercolour as it suits ethereal images. Masking fluid on the waterfalls allowed me to freely paint and blend colours.

In ‘Tears’ I aimed to capture how the ordinary can be made special by the viewer’s imagination, and how space and light interplay to create a magical atmosphere.

2. 'Death and Despair'
Part 1: 'Stay'
Part 2: 'Alive'
V's poem 'Death and Despair' is viewable here: https://thesassylibraryfox.wordpress.com/2020/08/12/death-and-despair/Please note that the poem addresses serious topics such as suicidal ideation and reference to death in a vehicular accident, so please be prepared.

This poem is a conversation between a girl and Death, and I was inspired by how there was still some hope amidst all the despair. I aimed to reflect this in the colours, and I’ve also depicted them at a crossroads of sorts with a more gritty texture. In Part 2, the girl gets up slowly and decides to hold onto the hope/will to live that Death has offered.
