The illustration is inspired by an article, “Social Media Filters Are Changing How Young People See Themselves” by Tonya Russel that was published in Teen Vogue, an American online publication that features on the issue of fashion, beauty, celebrity style, entertainment and teen issues.
Illustration Development
Rationale
The illustration's concept revolves around the importance of social media in today's world, where social media filters that unrealistically beautify features have created a new normal for how teens believe their faces should appear and how they should portray themselves to the world in order to boost their self-esteem and avoid social anxiety.

Consequently, teens in this generation rely heavily on social media filters to boost their self-esteem because it guarantees that their look is in accordance with the beauty standard in various occasions.

The butterflies, which signifies reborn and beauty indicates that the beauty filter gives a new life and new identity for the teens to live confidently in this face judging world.

The use of a dreamlike colour palette with purple as the dominating colour represents how social media filters have fulfilled the dreams of young people in the world of beauty. The background is in darker tone with radial gradient in yellow creating a highlight to the focal point of the illustration.
