BRIEF
Having been introduced to Grid System by Josef Brockmann, students are commissioned to design a 16-page, A4 publication and digital smart phone prototype for the magazine ‘Playfully Rigid’ by Design Observer. Students are supplied with unstyled text and images. With the prescription, students will decide the typography executions such as grid system, baseline grid, paragraph and character styles, compose image placement, colour palette and so on. Attention should be given to the hierarchy, target audience (reader), flow and consistency, dynamism, and visual language.
The Design Observer is a US-based online repository of writings on design, publishing a collection of essays titled ‘Playfully Rigid’, that contains profiles of influential graphic designers, typographic discourse and articles on visual culture.
