Granular materials, in certain ways, do not represent a single phase of matter, but rather have properties like solids, liquids, or gases depending on the average energy per grain. Granular materials, on the other hand, display features that are distinct in each of these phases because of this distinct behaviour, predicting granular flow is a difficult undertaking. Individual particles follow conventional mechanics, but when the calculation includes a large number of these interactions, the situation becomes increasingly difficult.
