The objective of this project was a furniture design that could be really manufactured. This project was team work of a group three in all concept and construction levels.
The concept of our creation came together as a result of the observation of two different incidents. The first and obvious, judging from the result was the geometry of a tennis ball and the fact that is formed by two identical pieces tight together in a 3 dimensional way. The second observation that conducted our main idea was an original technique to peal an orange using only one cut. The knife cuts around the orange skin following the exact same path as the white line on a tennis ball leaving as well two identical pieces of orange skin that can be removed and reassembled in the exact same position.
These observations led us to the design of two identical chairs that form a complete geometry when attached together based on the form of the tennis ball. The design process resulted in a twin system sofa that imitated the tennis ball with a diemeter about 1 meter and 25 instead of a diameter of 6.7cm. For its construction we used wooden frames whose assemblage formed a 3dimensional grid giving the desirable geometry of the double level curve. Pillows were then attached to the grid while the exterior surface was covered with yellow fabric so as to resemble to the concept’s starting point.
The finished product had given an original and elegant way of having two extremely comfortable and amusing sofas taking up a minimum of free space while offering a unique identity to the surrounding space.
