Arthur Hitchcock's profile

Bertoia, Starck, & Behar

Got the chance to bring in some incredible designs into the studio earlier this year. These chairs embody the efforts of a few of the most innovative/influential designers in their field.

The first image is a reflected composition of two separate photos of the Masters Chair.  The chair's design was collaboration of Philippe Starck & Eugeni Quitllet. The combined sketch like attributes from three classic chair designs. Jacobsen's Series 7, Eameses’ Molded Plastic Chair and Saarinen’s Tulip Armchair. The final chair, when photographed, took on an almost virtual appearance. The materials used reflected and diffused light in interesting ways, really providing me with a challenge. The chair might even pass for a three-dimensional rendering!

The second image in this series is a detail of the Diamond Chair by Harry Bertoia. I really wanted to accentuate the contours of the welded steel rods and bring emphasis to the pattern created within the negative space of each gap of the chair's back. The final image was acheived by experimenting with hard light from bare strobe bulbs.

The final image is a detail of the SAYL task chair by Yves Bahar. The chair itself was inspired by the Golden Gate Bridge & various other feats of engineering. I aimed to isolate the design as a whole, instead of focusing on any particular detail. The shape of both the back & support bar almost have a motion to them, what an incredible take on what is usually a very mundane item.

I thouroughly enjoyed playing with the texture & shape of each chair. I thought they both could stand alone & still make a bold statement, so I left my photographic techinque/set up rather bare. These images are my end result.
