A strong earthquake, felt from Los Angeles to Redding, rocked the San Francisco Bay Area early
Monday morning.

The earthquakes struck at 8:12 a.m. PDT and its epicenter was beneath the Hayward Hills, along the
Hayward Fault, according to Penny Gertz, a scientist from the U.S. Geological Survey in Menlo Park. The
earthquake measured a staggering 6.4 magnitude on the Richter scale.

Mike Beamer, a Hayward resident, said he felt a rolling motion that lasted for 30 seconds, with a big
jolt in the middle. He went on to say, "I was eating my breakfast and the room started rolling. I dove
under the table just as I heard an explosion outside and a chunk of cement flew through my kitchen
window. That's when the screaming started across the street.”

Damage from the quake has been severe. An auto shop in Hayward partially collapsed, fire personnel
were able to stabilize McHenry’s Auto Supply long enough to conduct a search and cap a gas leak.

In total, twenty-one fire personnel, twelve police officers and 5 American Red Cross workers responded
to the building collapse, with some arriving within four minutes of the quake, according to Jennifer Vu,
of the Hayward Fire Department. Fire personnel found 2 dead and 6 injured within the building. Three
of the six injured were transported to Hayward General Hospital for their injuries, and names of the
dead are being withheld pending family notification.
