IKAAI- A Slow Fashion Capsule Collection

With an aim to co-create with local artisans, we focused on creating gender neutral garments using techniques of appliqué and hand embroidered details.  In the wake of the rising issue of immense textile waste generation, we tried to maintain a sustainable process right from sourcing discarded fabrics or factory waste to simple silhouettes in order to minimise cutting wastage.

We tried to add value to existing garments with slight wear and tear with the hand stitched details by repurposing waste fabrics, targeting a young contemporary market.
UPCYCLING | GENDER NEUTRAL | MINIMAL WASTE | REVERSIBILITY
Our material sources were local Sunday markets, thrift stores and the college community was also encouraged to gather discarded clothes and fabrics. We shared the process to show that clothes with slight wear and tear could become as good as new with unique hand details. Our approach was to make the best of what we found, rather than having a plan and sourcing according to what we had in mind. This challenged us to think deeper in a more real context.
We also aimed to make applique; a traditional technique, more relevant in the contemporary context by bridging Bhagyashree's expertise of the craft with college fashion. Exploring reversibility, gender neautrality also aimed to increase the life of one garment in the wardrobe.
