"Mother of Pearl" Expressive Typography Cards

"Mother of Pearl" Expressive Typography Cards
In this project, I picked the song Mother of Pearl because it has a lot of descriptive lyrics and a narrative that would be interesting to represent typographically. I wanted to present the project in a playing or a tarot card format which references chance, losing, and hope that is relevant to the song’s lyrics. A significant challenge was using typography expressively in such a small space as the cards are 3.5 x 5.8 inches in size.
In this project, I learned the ways in which typography can impact the way a reader reads, understands, and views text. I learned that typography can carry such a large range of designs, portray different tones and ideas. For example, using Courier New type and justified text is reminiscent of play scripts. This assignment made me aware of how type can reference  and al-lude to a context. I enjoyed creating visually dominant text. The most challenging category for me was reading, which required more of an analysis of the syntax of the text rather than solely visual communication.

Overall, this project was useful to practice interpreting content and making design choices to communicate the content visually. In a quick glance, a viewer will assume the idea of a text, how-ever, when a text is presented in a neutral manner, there is no visual communication. The visual presentation of text is significant in how it will be perceived. In future design projects, I will explore more options when it comes to typography and consider the various ways it can be designed to be seen differently.
