Uttarayan, the kite flying festival, is huge in Gujarat. People spend days up on their terraces competing with other people and trying to bring down their kites. Unfortunately, they bring down a lot more than just kites. The glass thread that they use causes fatal injuries to thousands of birds. Although there are organizations that rescue these birds and try their best to save their lives, many die and many are never able to fly again. And whatever birds survive the festival, will have to go through it again the next year. Before you head out to buy your kites and Manja, I beg all of you to think about is more important, 2 days of kite flying or the lives of thousands of birds.
