Mirrors and Reflections Photo Series: ASTU 2502

The focus of this project is about exploring techniques using mirrors and reflections. I staged all of my photographs using multiple mirrors to create repetitions of my subjects and an infinity or pattern effect. I used flash for most of my images to refract and reflect more light and to illuminate the subject. Many of my selected objects are glass or shiny to heighten the reflected light. I tried to keep the backgrounds as dark as possible for a more ambiguous space and to emphasize the object in each image. In some of the photos, the reflections and cropping turn the objects into an abstracted version of themselves, which I found compelling as a final product. Much of this project was trial and error for me, with a lot of experimentation to create visually arresting and enigmatic photographs. I wanted an overall surrealistic and dreamy effect with this series. Initially my idea for this project was to do collections of objects that I owned, but then I changed my idea to emphasize just a few items I owned in a theme switch that is more about mirrors and reflections. As I was printing my final images, someone recommended that I research Florence Henri; she is a photographer that uses mirrors in her work to create surrealist photographs, and I can see a relationship between her work and mine. My series is unique and interesting in that each photograph features a different item that is reflected in a different way in an ambiguous space. The bright colors, reflected light, and illusionistic quality of my work makes it feel dreamy and abstract.
