For this week's task, we are required to research on various opening or closing title sequence and select one which we find interesting. Once we found the interesting one, we are to analyze the title sequence, the elements and the background music used, the transitions and effects, film semiotics used, etc.

I have chosen the opening sequence of the film Charlie And The Chocolate Factory.

Based on Roald Dahl's 1964 British novel of the same name, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is a 2005 musical fantasy film directed by Tim Burton and written by John August. The film stars Johnny Depp as Willy Wonka and Freddie Highmore as Charlie Bucket.

What the movie is about:

Willy Wonka chooses to let five youngsters into his chocolate factory by releasing five golden tickets in five different chocolate bars, resulting in tremendous chaos. The tickets start to turn up, with the fifth going to Charlie Bucket, a very remarkable young man. Charlie, accompanied by his Grandpa, joins the other children at the most spectacular factory ever. However, not everything in the factory works according to plan.
The opening sequence begins with the snow and slowly the logo of the American film production company which is The Warner Bros. Pictures collaborate with The Village Roadshow Pictures fades in.
After the Village Roadshow Pictures logo fades out, the factory started to show along with the title "WARNER BROS. PICTURES PRESENTS". The camera began to get closer to the factory. The main cast Johnny Depp's name is shown as the camera is circling the factory and gets faster as it goes up to the factory's chimney and into it, showing total darkness.
As it goes to total darkness, the mixing of chocolate scene along with the film title is shown. The process of producing the chocolate are such as mixing to moulding to packing the chocolate.
In the sequence, the process of producing the chocolate is demonstrated so it's clear for the audience that this movie has something to do with the chocolate factory. One part of the scene is showing that Willy Wonka is putting down the "Golden Ticket" five times in different chocolate bars, and the packaging of the chocolate bar has a label "WIN A TRIP TO WONKA'S CHOCOLATE FACTORY" where the golden tickets will be received by the five youngsters. The demonstration of producing the chocolate also shows that the five lucky children will be visiting the factory.
The Elements used:
Factory, Machines, Chocolate bars, Golden ticket, A part of Willy Wonka's hand, boxes with their destination label, trucks.

Background Music:
The background music used for the opening title sequence is "Main Title" by Danny Elfman. Tim Burton would always let Danny Elfman to go wild with his Opening Titles and End Credits, giving him full control. "Main Title" composed is giving us the dark, wild, adrenaline rush, exciting vibe.

The Transitions and Effects:
The scene shows the process of producing the chocolate bar from mixing to packing. The transitions are such as close up, zoom out to medium shot, medium shot to close up, wide shot. It goes from one scene that shows one machine to another machine in the process of producing.

As the opening title sequence ended, there is a scene showing Charlie Bucket was looking at the Wonka's trucks passing by. Charlie was running back to his home that looks like he came from a poor family but he was one of the luckiest boy in the entire world, he just didn't know it yet.

Thank you, hope you enjoy reading it! :)
