The title of the final video project in this course is called "LIVE". "LIVE" is a story about a live broadcast that linked the three main characters from three different backgrounds. The cinematic aspects that we used were inspired by the film, Amores Perros (2000). We applied the technique of triptych and contained three distinct stories connected by the live broadcast on social media.
Social disorder is the theme of the video. The concept of the storyline is suspense and dark humour. The characteristics of the three characters display different personality disorders, which are irritability, depression and anti-social. The live broadcast is central to connecting each of the stories and showing the morbid state of society on the Internet nowadays.
Synopsis
'Be Kind To Everyone Including Yourself.’
The film, "LIVE", presents three distinct stories centre on a teen girl who goes live for her part- time online business; an internet troll who posts and comments inflammatory messages in an online community; and a slayer who abducts and kills someone with the feelings of hurt and resentment. A kidnapping incident connects these three stories which are linked in various ways, including the presence of social disorders in each of them.
The first segment is “Irritability”, a girl who endures long after the abuse and neglect occurs by her father. Going through prolonged periods of abuse and neglect make her feels more irritable. She finds it more difficult to manage her emotions and become overwhelmed. Anger is often a large part of the girl’s response to trauma. Anger helps her cope with life’s stress by giving her the energy to keep going in the face of trouble. Therefore, the girl becomes an internet troll in Facebook live with the intent of provoking a live broadcaster into displaying emotional responses. She purposefully harms the live broadcaster for no reason at all.
On the other hand, the second segment is “Depression”. The story is about a university teen girl who faces financial matters and an emergency fund for her brother’s surgery. Due to financial stress, she feels stressed out and overwhelmed about money within the previous month. When she suffers financial stress and loan sharks, these lead her to depression. Vicious cycle anxiety and depression occur when overdue bills and paydays arrive. Owing to the surgical fundraising in a short period, she tries and starts live-streaming e-commerce on Facebook Live. As a live broadcaster, she helps buyers connect with the product like holding and explaining the product allows for all questions to be cleared up. However, she keeps receiving some negative comments and feedback from one of her followers during the live streaming. These harsh comments greatly affect her mental health.
Lastly, the final story is “Antisocial”, a character is a delivery man and also a slayer. He with a physical disability have a congenital physical which is vision loss in his right eye. Due to his physical disability, he has been teased and ridiculed by people every time. Therefore, he has an antisocial personality disorder and his behaviour that is verbally or physically harmful to other people including behaviour that severely violates social expectations. One day, he deliveries a parcel to a teen girl. He was looked up and down by the teen girl with contempt and slighting eyes. At night, he watches a live on Facebook Live. He realizes that the live broadcaster is the teen girl he met that morning, is gossiping about his physical disability during the live streaming. This incident indicates him as a violent crime which is kidnapping and killing the teen girl.
The film explores the aspect of social disorders in our society nowadays through these three interlinked stories all resolve with a kidnapping incident.
