LIGHTIN | Shanghai Material Study

FUTURE CRAFT CHINA IS A 5 MONTHS STUDY AWAY PROGRAM
IN SHANGHAI TO CREATE POSITIVE SOCIAL IMPACT.

In a collaboration between Tongji University College of Design & Innovation in Shanghai and ArtCenter
College of Design, designers collaborated to envision new opportunities for design to revive craft traditions
and create social impact with artisan communities in Shanghai, Jiangsu and Zhejiang provinces.
Together with tin artisans, we created wall-light with three different personalities
to celebrate tin textures revealed through light + shadow.
tinGOLD is made by striking and melting the surface.
When the light is on, the surface color turns into gold.

tinDROP requires liquid tin spread onto acrylic. The material reaction
creates beautiful sparkles that get projected onto the wall when lit.
tinWEAVE utilizes traditional metal weaving technique. The strips used to create
this weave are upcycled scrap materials found in a tin silverware factory.
At Shanghai World Innovation & Entrepreneurship Expo (WIEE),
this collaboration was featured among the works of 100 organizations such as
UNIQLO that have influenced design and innovation around the world!
