Festival As a Transformational Tool - Distance Relatives
Some half decent photos from the end year party at the Distant Relatives in Kilifi where i've spent the last end of five years celebrating the New years out of my usual home of the bustling Nairobi. Kilifi was my first long stay away from Nairobi after high school. I'de gone there to be part of the VSO/ICS international development program. A project that selected young community leaders who got paired by UK counter parts in an host home in Kilifi.
Beneath the Baobabs is a magical East African destination event space located at the end of the creek on the Kilifi coast of Kenya. We are also home to the acclaimed 3 day Beneath the Baobabs Festival (formerly Kilifi New Year).
Within a spectacular natural setting we have infrastructure to host up to 10,000 people and a mission to provide a safe platform fostering creativity, environmental sustainability, consciousness, community and freedom of expression, while showcasing East African music, art and culture.
Our three-day Beneath the Baobabs Festival is is the first ‘Carbon Neutral Festival in Africa’ and bans all single-use plastics.

Kilifi is located in between the bustling of Mombasa and Malindi and has become a
festival zone as well as a holiday attraction something of a transfomational tool;
it's holistic spaces are changing the coastline into a nest for toursits;
The recently numerous Music festivals and a slowed atmosphere away from the busy city paths of Mombasa or Nairobi and for tourists just before making your way into the magnificicent Kenya safaris.
Nestled between the Giriama village of Fumbini and the beautiful emerald waters of Kilifi Creek, Distant Relatives Ecolodge & Backpackers is both a message of optimism and an experimental model of environmentally and socially conscious living. Adventurers from around the world gather here to share tales of the road, mingle with the local community, and enjoy the some of the most beautiful ocean views and sunsets that Kenya has to offer. In just one hour’s drive from either Mombasa or Malindi you could be joining us for reef snorkeling trips, moonlit dhow sailing, village walks, beach bonfires, wild cliff adventures, and various live music events.
Beneath the Baobabs, home to all artists and creatives, is a one of a kind secluded event space, with secret orange and lemon groves, hundreds of square meters of overhanging decks under the shade of a two-thousand year old majestic Baobab tree, and our now iconic Main Stage. Built with passion and care for the natural environment from the outset and a Leave No Trace approach to all events, Beneath the Baobabs is ready to safely host up to 10,000 people with up to 5 unique stages, bars and all the infrastructure required for a successful event.
