Interplanetary Space Flight Data

This was a data project I was given as part of my masters program. I was given the task of selecting a data set, analysing it and then creating a design piece that portrayed the data in an interesting way.

The dataset I chose to use was a dataset that had information of all the space flight missions where man made vehicle had venture to another planet or body in space. The data had information such as wether the mission was a success or failure as well as the names, dates and country of origin of the mission.

The ideation behind my design was to represent the overall shape of the planet earth. Each mission then would have its information displayed extending away from this shape to symbolise it venture in to space. Placed on a dark empty background similar to the void of space.
Additional information was included around the edges of the design. The bottom left corner of the chart shows one of these bar graphs that gives a breakdown of which planets have been visited most.

Using the same 45 degree angle reversed the countries which have carried out the most missions to other planets can be seen in the bottom right hand corner.
Different versions of the poster can be printed alongside it showing different levels of information. Above the same design can be seen but only showing the missions that the United States carried out. This could be printed as a smaller poster and displayed within the same frame or as a digital product the user could select filters that displays the different levels of information.
The legend can be found in the top left of the design. Each mission arm has a grid displayed on it. This grid is used to identify which country the mission came from. The grid is separated into 9 sections with a black dot displayed somewhere along the grid to indicate the country.

The green and red tabs state whether the missions was either a success or unsuccessful. At the end of each arm the date the mission either succeeded or failed is displayed along with the name of the mission in gold.
