Sister Dearest
"Sister Dearest” is an interactive, one-time use artist book, created around the story of a girl (Geeta), losing all the peace and quiet in her life, the day she gets a sister.
The form I’ve chosen is horizontally long and rectangular in shape, representing the one very long day Geeta has. The form also provides for the page to represent the initial silence Geeta has in her life, prior to becoming an elder sister. The book has been made using a butterfly bind.
Geeta appears in the corner, smiling with her eyes shut. The page contains dotted lines as a reference for where to tear from. The tabs on the left are provided to pull the page along said dotted lines. As the reader does so, the page tears from the centre, exposing a bit of the next page. The element of tearing has been incorporated to generate a feeling of discomfort, such as the kind Geeta feels. Tearing the pages also adds the element of sound to the book, which is an important part of the story.
The pages progressively become more and more visually chaotic, and messy to represent the anxiety and noise building up throughout Geeta’s day. Her discomfort is represented through her facial expressions.
The amount of noise, and the source of the noise is represented through red lines, on each page.
The book is a one-time use, since it must be torn for the user to interact with it. This has been done to represent how Geeta’s life will never be the same again. As in her life, she can’t go back to the way her life was, the reader can’t go back once they’ve opened the next page. The element of tearing also represents the feeling of intrusion, that Geeta feels on this day, more so than she’s ever felt before.
